Panoramic Loop between Antillo and the Agrò Valley

This gravel loop itinerary crosses some of the most authentic landscapes of the Agrò Valley, a mountainous area of northeastern Sicily characterized by small villages, forests of the Peloritani Mountains and panoramic views that descend toward the Ionian Sea. The route starts from the village of Antillo and develops through rural roads, gravel sections and historic connections between the inland towns of the Messina area.

The Agrò Valley extends along the eastern side of the Peloritani Mountains and is crossed by the Agrò stream, which flows from the mountains down to the Ionian Sea. This territory is known for its unique combination of nature, history and traditions, with ancient villages and landscapes still deeply connected to local agricultural culture.

The tour winds through Mediterranean forests, cultivated hillsides, agricultural terraces and scenic viewpoints that allow cyclists to observe the entire valley and the surrounding mountain ranges. Along the route, quiet secondary asphalt roads alternate with gravel tracks that are ideal for gravel bikes or touring e-bikes.

The starting point is the center of Antillo, a small mountain village located at about 480 meters above sea level in the heart of the Peloritani Mountains. The village originated as an ancient pastoral settlement and still preserves a strong connection with agriculture and livestock farming.

Leaving the village behind, the route enters valleys and scenic ridges dominated by olive groves, forests and mountain pastures. Many of the roads follow historic rural paths that were traditionally used to connect the villages of the valley and to reach agricultural lands.

Continuing along the itinerary, the route crosses hilly areas that offer wide views over the Agrò Valley, crossed by the Agrò stream that originates in the Peloritani Mountains and flows down toward the Ionian coast.

At several points along the route the landscape opens into panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and, on clear days, glimpses of the Ionian Sea and the mountain ridges that connect this territory with Mount Etna.

The route also passes through natural environments typical of the Peloritani Mountains, with oak forests, chestnut trees and Mediterranean scrub, making the ride particularly scenic during spring and autumn.

After a series of rolling climbs and descents, the route gradually returns toward Antillo, completing a loop that represents a perfect cycling experience combining nature, mountain landscapes and historic villages of eastern Sicily.

This itinerary is particularly suitable for those who wish to explore the Sicilian hinterland in a slow and sustainable way, cycling along quiet roads surrounded by an authentic and unspoiled landscape.
